Why We Redesigned Flip Pick Instead of Declaring Victory

Founder Journal #7

"The goal was never to prove we were right. The goal was to build something people genuinely loved to use."

About the Founder Journal

Building a company isn't a straight line. It's a series of experiments, setbacks, unexpected lessons, and small victories that rarely make it into product announcements.

The Founder Journal is where we share the stories behind PFV Innovations—not as a marketing campaign, but as an honest record of what it's like to invent, build, and keep moving forward. Whether you're a musician, an entrepreneur, an inventor, or simply someone with an idea you can't stop thinking about, we hope these stories encourage you to keep going.

One of the questions we've been asked recently is:

"Why redesign Flip Pick when you already had a product on the market?"

The answer is surprisingly simple.

Because our customers deserved better.

That probably sounds obvious.

But it's not always easy to admit after you've spent years building something.

They Didn't Hate the Idea

They Hated the Product.

When we shipped the first resin-printed Flip Picks back in 2023, we learned something very important.

People weren't shy.

Some of the feedback was difficult to read.

At first glance...

It sounds discouraging.

But there was something else in almost every email.

Almost every customer ended with some version of the same thought:

"I really hope you can make this work."

That sentence changed everything.

They weren't rejecting Flip Pick.

They were encouraging us to keep going.

The idea had value.

Our execution needed work.

Those are two very different problems.

We Never Considered Standing Still

People sometimes ask if there was ever a point where we thought,

"This is good enough."

Honestly...

No.

We believed every version we released was good enough to put into customers' hands.

Otherwise we wouldn't have sold it.

But we also believed every version could become better.

Those two ideas aren't contradictory.

They're the foundation of continuous improvement.

If we'd ignored our customers because we'd already brought a product to market...

There probably wouldn't be a Next Generation Flip Pick.

The Redesign Didn't Start with Better Plastic

It Started with Better Questions.

Instead of asking,

"How do we fix the resin?"

We started asking,

"What are our customers actually trying to tell us?"

That subtle change completely altered our approach.

They weren't asking for another resin.

They wanted comfort.

Durability.

Better craftsmanship.

Better onboarding.

Greater confidence.

The redesign wasn't about changing materials.

It was about better serving the people who were trusting us.

That's How the FlexBand Was Born

One of the biggest changes was replacing the original rigid ring with what eventually became the FlexBand.

That wasn't just a cosmetic improvement.

It made the system softer.

More comfortable.

It allowed greater articulation of the index finger during fingerstyle playing.

It also forced us to rethink manufacturing from the ground up.

The FlexBand couldn't simply be 3D printed.

It had to be designed for injection molding from the very beginning.

Looking back, that decision changed the future of Flip Pick.

We Finally Solved Another Problem We'd Been Thinking About From Day One

Even before we launched our earliest versions, we knew guitar players would eventually want options.

Different gauges.

Different shapes.

Maybe even different materials.

The problem was...

We couldn't expect someone to buy an entirely new system every time they wanted to experiment.

That thinking eventually led to interchangeable picks.

Now players invest in one FlexBand...

...and simply swap picks as their playing evolves.

Sometimes the best ideas aren't new.

They're simply waiting until the rest of the product catches up.

Then Everything Else Started Improving Too

The redesign wasn't one change.

It became dozens.

Delmar Products supplied premium celluloid unlike anything we'd been able to source ourselves.

D'Andrea USA brought generations of manufacturing expertise that resulted in beautifully polished edges, remarkable consistency, and exceptional durability.

The redesigned picks became stronger.

The FlexBand became more comfortable.

The packaging became retail-ready while making it easier for first-time users to get started.

We added QR codes that immediately connect players to tutorials and the Flip Pick Companion App.

Each improvement solved a different barrier.

Together...

They transformed the entire experience.

The Moment We'd Been Waiting For

Ironically, when the first Delmar samples arrived...

We weren't home.

A family emergency had taken us out of town.

One of our sons sent us photos.

They looked great.

But photographs couldn't answer the question we'd been asking ourselves for years.

"How do they feel?"

When we finally returned home and held them in our hands...

Everything changed.

The finish.

The edges.

The feel.

The durability.

We looked at each other and almost immediately reached the same conclusion.

"This is the product we imagined from the beginning."

Not because it was perfect.

But because it finally matched the vision we'd been chasing for four years.

Looking Back...

Could we have skipped directly to today's product?

Maybe.

But I don't think we should have.

Those first customers taught us lessons we never could have discovered on our own.

Without their honesty...

There would be no FlexBand.

No interchangeable system.

No Companion App.

No partnership with Delmar and D'Andrea.

No Next Generation Flip Pick.

Version One wasn't a failure.

It was an education.

Looking Forward

One of the questions we've started asking ourselves is:

"Will there be a Generation Three?"

Honestly...

Probably.

Not because Generation Two isn't everything we'd hoped for.

It is.

But because improvement never really ends.

We already have ideas we'd love to explore someday.

Different materials.

More gauges.

Additional pick shapes.

Even further refinements to the FlexBand.

For now, though, our focus is simple.

Make Generation Two the very best product it can possibly be.

If we do that well...

Generation Three will take care of itself.

Redesigning Flip Pick taught us something we hope we'll never forget.

Iteration isn't a phase.

It's a mindset.

The moment you believe your product can't be improved...

You stop listening.

And the moment you stop listening...

You stop serving the people who trusted you in the first place.

We didn't redesign Flip Pick because Generation One failed.

We redesigned it because our customers believed the idea deserved its best possible version.

We agreed.

Thanks for reading.

The Founder Journal is our ongoing record of what we're learning while building PFV Innovations. We don't have all the answers, but we believe there is value in sharing the journey honestly. If you're building something of your own—whether it's a business, a song, a piece of art, or simply a better version of yourself—we hope you'll keep going. So will we.
