When people hear about the Flip Pick Companion App, they often assume we'd been planning it for years.
We hadn't.
In fact...
It started with an idea that had nothing to do with Flip Pick.
One Idea Led to Another
A few months ago, Jamie had an idea for an entirely different app.
We're still working on it, so we'll save that story for another day.
As we started exploring what it would take to build software, another question quietly appeared.
"What if we built something that helped Flip Pick players?"
At first, we imagined something simple.
Maybe a few tutorials.
Maybe some downloadable practice material.
Perhaps a collection of songs that worked especially well with Flip Pick.
Something useful.
Something that added value after someone opened the package.
Then, like so many things in our journey...
One idea led to another.
We Didn't Want Another Manual
One thing we'd learned from our first customers was that people wanted help getting started.
Not because Flip Pick was difficult.
Because it was different.
Every new product has a learning curve.
We could have created a PDF.
We could have recorded a handful of YouTube videos.
Those ideas certainly would have helped.
But they didn't feel complete.
An app felt different.
Even though it's digital...
It feels like something you own.
Something that's there whenever inspiration strikes.
That mattered to us.
We wanted the Companion App to feel like a gift.
Not another instruction manual.
The Easiest Business Decision We Ever Made
One question came up almost immediately.
Should we charge for it?
The answer surprised us by how quickly it came.
No.
Not because there isn't value in it.
There absolutely is.
But because the Companion App exists for the same reason Flip Pick exists.
To remove barriers.
If someone wants to become a better guitarist...
Write their first song...
Understand music theory...
Or simply enjoy making music a little more...
Why would we put another barrier in front of them?
Yes, offering it free might eventually encourage someone to try Flip Pick.
We certainly hope it does.
But that wasn't the reason.
The reason was much simpler.
Helping more people make music is the mission.
The app helps us do that.
It Kept Growing
Every time we finished one feature...
Another idea appeared.
A metronome.
Tuners.
Practice tools.
Song resources.
Then came something much bigger.
What if the Companion App didn't simply teach people how to use Flip Pick?
What if it helped them discover their own musical voice?
That question changed everything.
Filling the Gaps
There are already excellent apps for learning guitar.
Fantastic tuners.
Outstanding metronomes.
Comprehensive lesson platforms.
We didn't want to compete with them.
Instead, we asked a different question.
"What's missing?"
That's become one of our favorite questions.
The Companion App isn't trying to replace everything else.
It's trying to connect the pieces that already exist.
Helping players find the right resources.
Helping them organize ideas.
Helping them move from learning...
...to creating.
The Moment It Became Something Bigger
There was one feature that changed how we viewed the entire project.
The key finder.
The chord progression builder.
As we were building those tools, we suddenly realized we weren't creating an instruction manual anymore.
We were building something that could help people write songs.
That moment felt significant.
Not because the feature was technically impressive.
Because it aligned perfectly with everything we'd been trying to accomplish since the day Flip Pick was invented.
Helping people express themselves.
Our Favorite Feature Isn't AI
One feature we're especially proud of is called Create with Riff.
Ironically...
It's almost the opposite of using artificial intelligence to write a song for you.
Instead, it guides you through the creative process.
It asks questions.
Offers prompts.
Suggests possibilities.
But the song remains yours.
Your ideas.
Your emotions.
Your story.
The app doesn't replace creativity.
It encourages it.
We think that's a much more meaningful role for technology in art.
Looking Ahead
If someone asked where we hope the Companion App will be in five years...
The answer has nothing to do with downloads.
Or subscriptions.
Or rankings.
Our dream is much simpler.
One day we'd love to turn on the radio...
Hear a song...
And discover it was written with a little help from the Flip Pick Companion.
Not because the app wrote it.
Because it helped someone else find the confidence to do it themselves.
That would be enough.
Looking Back
Building the Companion App taught us something we hope we'll never forget.
There are always new ways to help people.
Sometimes that means inventing a better guitar pick.
Sometimes it means creating a free tool that removes another obstacle.
Sometimes it simply means asking,
"What else would make this journey easier?"
Looking back, we thought we were building an app.
What we were really building was another way to fulfill the promise we made to ourselves years ago.
Remove barriers.
Make music.
Share the joy.
The Companion App just happens to remove a different kind of barrier.
